A young Brummie chef who had to stack shelves in Tesco to make ends meet during the pandemic has been crowned the winner of MasterChef: The Professionals .

Dan Lee, 29, took home the coveted trophy after wowing judges with his fusion of Asian and European cooking, which culminated in a final menu of Singapore chilli crab, chicken rice and smoked hay treacle tart.

Lee spent ten years travelling the world and indulging his passion for cooking before returning to the UK from Singapore just before the coronavirus outbreak. He did not qualify for any government financial support, so turned to his local Tesco in Birmingham as he sought work away from the kitchen.

Lee was popular with the store’s management because of his discipline
